WritingSurvival is a campaign on a mission to start a conversation about the more complex parts of mental health while encouraging the use of creativity as a coping skill.
We aim to create a safe, inclusive space for anyone to share their experiences as openly and honestly as they wish, without feeling the need to hide any part of themselves.
This movement is a constant reminder that your emotions are valid, regardless of what societal pressures or internal expectations are telling you. Although we are not trained therapists, we are speaking about mental health through the lens of someone who has been facing these issues head-on for years.
First Saturday of Every Month 7:30pm EST
We hold a virtual open mic on Instagram Live (@writingsurvival) the first Saturday of every month at 7:30pm EST and we are usually live for at least 1.5 hours (sometimes more if we have a good turn out!). This event is open to everyone. If you’d like to share any kind of art (writing, visual art, photography, etc.) or thoughts relating to mental health, you can request to do so during the live. We love hearing from all of you!
We put out Volume 1 of Survival Guide in late May 2023. Physical and digital copies are available in our store. We are also working to get it included in some NYC bookstores (and maybe other stores, hopefully!).
Survival Guide is a zine containing writing and artwork related to mental health collected by people in the WritingSurvival community. We believe that creativity can be very beneficial to recovery and mental wellness. We hope that readers can find something within the pages that resonates in a way that is helpful. We will be putting out more volumes in order to continue to include a variety of types of art coming from as many creators as possible.
We are accepting submissions for Volume 2 of Survival Guide via email (writingsurvival@gmail.com). We are accepting mental health related artwork, writing, photography, etc. Everyone who has work included in the zine will receive a digital copy of the zine free of charge. Physical copies will by up for sale on our website alongside the digital copies.
We ask that all written submissions be a maximum of 64 lines, each line containing a maximum of 13 words. Please be aware that there will be a page break between lines 32-33. We also ask that each person submitting work limit their submissions to 5 pieces per volume.
